Weekly Poem: Week of  December 3, 2012

being followed at Auschwitz

somewhere between Block 11
and the terminal platform where
Mengele made the selections
the crowd of Polish teens
got too big, too close

i was wearing blue jeans
running shoes, talking English
a tourist at Auschwitz
during martial law
they had to be there
a required school visit

i was a far away stranger
Franek, my Polish companion
turned on them. told them
to give me space, respect
let me be in Auschwitz

they did and i left some of me
there, entangled in the barb wire
and spring flowers on the platform
